About Us

Come to St. Peter's Methodist Church on weekdays and you will often find people there. We like our Church and halls to be used by community groups and you may find coffee mornings, school assemblies, music concerts, parent and toddler groups, market research, scouts, drama groups to name but a few!

There are often people working in the Church office - our Minister, pastoral worker, student worker, administrator or caretaker. Our church is very people-centred!

Our Sunday activities centre around worship, Junior Church and creche at 10.30am. We are a diverse community comprising people of all ages and backgrounds, united by a common desire to explore the Christian message and to encourage each other in living it out.

There is a definite sense of togetherness in our Church. We worship together for some of the time each Sunday morning and then our forward looking Junior Church makes the most of the hall and other rooms for a variety of activities helping them to explore Christianity in ways appropriate to their age group.

About 11.30am as the Church Service comes to an end, the Junior Church prepares the hall for everyone to spend time together over squash, tea, coffee and lots of biscuits. There is lots of noisy chatter, real friendship across the generations as well as the opportunity for peer groups to gather around the tables.

We are a Fair Trade Church and there is always a well-stocked Fair Trade stall available. People often stay around for some time.

Some people come back for the 6.30pm Service. Numbers are much smaller than the Morning Service but the sense of togetherness is so strong and the quieter style of worship provides time for deep devotion and more concentrated reflection on the Christian Gospel. Watch the schedule for our next evening youth-led service as well!

On Wednesdays at 10am there is a short Service of Holy Communion in the church. This "spoken" service usually follows one of the Communion orders in the Methodist Worship Book and includes particular prayer requests from those present. Most people stay for coffee together in the hall foyer where they are joined by others from the Church, the local community or people visiting Canterbury.

Everyone is welcome to all our Church Services. Many are led by Geoff, our Minister, but in true Methodist tradition, we have an excellent group of Local Preachers and some retired Ministers, as well as Paul Glass, the Chaplain at Kent College, the Methodist Independent School in Canterbury, who also leads Services. (See the weekly Newsletter for further details each week.)
